Avoid a Nightmare: Tips to an Enjoyable Move

Blog

Oh no! Moving day is quickly approaching and whether you are a first-timer, or a seasoned vet, moving is time-consuming and stressful. Here are four tips to avoid a nightmare and make your move an enjoyable one.

1. Planning Is Everything

As with anything, planning is everything. The sooner you start the better, as a plan can save you stress, time, and money. Nothing makes a move more difficult and nightmarish then running out of time and going over budget. Prepare a checklist for each step of the moving process. Purchase your boxes and packing material as early as possible. This gives you the opportunity to pre-package anything you use on a daily basis, such as things in your garage or seasonal clothing. If you are lucky enough to have at least sixty days to plan, it is beneficial to have your checklists match your time frame. Set a schedule with tasks at 60 days, 45 days, 30 days, 15 days, 1 week, and moving day.

During your planning explore any and all moving companies in your area. Picking the right company is crucial to a smooth move. Take a moment to research the following:

  • Request written price quotes
  • If available, check the company's website and their reviews.
  • If finances allow, it is wise to spend a little more on a mover to protect your property and save yourself some stress

2. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Ask friends and family to help you with getting things together and sorted out. Try to assign one or two rooms to each team.  If you have children, include them in the moving process. It will make them feel important and ease the difficulty of the move.

3. Don't Forget to Make the Changes

In the stress of moving, many people forget to file the appropriate paperwork related to the move. Filling out these documents will save you a lot of hassle later on.

  • Change of address form completed and return to the post office
  • Contact utility companies
  • Update your driver's license or ID
  • Update your insurance information
  • Call your bank to update account information
  • Notify your job and children's schools of the move

4. Pack with Ease

Instead of throwing everything in boxes at the last moment, pack according to plan. First, organize everything and get rid of any excess clutter.  If you haven't used something within the last 2 years, chances are it is safe to give it away or sell it. Labeling is key; make sure to label your bags and boxes clearly and correctly. This helps when it comes time for your "team" or moving crew to place your belongings in their perspective areas in your new home. As an alternative to cataloging your boxes with what's inside them, just name and number your boxes, for example: Kitchen Box 1. Mark down what is in the boxes in a notebook.

Remember to keep calm and take pleasure in the moving experience. It will be over before you know it. Just follow these four tips and you should experience an enjoyable move. For assistance, talk to a professional like Bekins Van Lines Inc.
