Does Your Home Need Both A Water Filtration And Softening System?

Business Blog

It's a common misconception to think that a water filtration and water softening system are the same thing. These whole home systems actually serve different purposes that you may not be aware of. A home may require the need for both types of systems, while another may only require one system. By understanding the differences between filtration and softening systems, you can decide if they are necessary for your house.

Water Softening

The purpose of a water softener is to remove minerals from water that will cause it to be hard. The removal of the minerals is very important, since having hard water will cause people in your home to have dry skin, and cause mineral deposits to collect on your bath and shower surfaces and in household appliances. Hard water can also cause problems with removing residue left over from soap on your clothes after washing them.

You can have water tested by a professional to figure out if you need a whole home water softener, or you can determine if you have hard water by yourself. All you need is a plastic bottle that has a cap, and some dish detergent.

Fill half of the bottle with cold water you would like to test. Then add a couple drops of the dish detergent inside the bottle, and place the cap tightly on it. Shake the sealed bottle a little bit, and then remove its cap. If soap suds are causing the bottle to overflow, you don't have an issue with hard water. If your bottle doesn't completely fill with soap suds, or the suds go away quickly, your home can benefit from having a water softening system installed.

Water Filtration

A water filtration system will remove the additional impurities that are in your home's water. This includes sodium, fluoride, chlorine, and other contaminants that impact your home's water quality.

All water that comes from a municipal source will have impurities, but you do not necessarily need a filtration system to remove them. You can request a report from your city that tells you the quality of the water, or have your water tested at a lab to see how safe it is. Well water is different, and should be tested to determine what kind of impurities are in it. If the results show that even one contaminant has higher than normal levels, consider having a whole home water filtration system installed by a local plumber.
